About this petal
The journey to and from school can impact heavily on local communities. It affects public transport patterns, causes localised congestion around schools and contributes to the sharp road traffic peak each morning. The problem directly affects young people in education and their families. Indirectly it touches everyone through its effects on health, education and air quality. Around 1 in 5 cars on the road at 8.50am is on the school run.
A School Travel Plan is a framework of measures to encourage a shift away from car use towards safer, more sustainable travel modes. It should act as an umbrella for all that a school is doing to promote sustainable travel choice as part of it's behavioural change agenda. An effective School Travel Plan should be community inclusive and encompass accessibility, health, road safety and independence as part of its approach to delivering sustainable modal shift
